The mission of A Pocket of Sunshine is very simple; to lead with love. We are inspiring people on their self-discovery journey by providing individuals with a stepping stone to developing a clearer vision of themselves, assisting them in creating self-care routines, and opportunities to pour into themselves with love. Are you a bi=udAll of this while giving back just by journaling. We pride ourselves on community and bridging a gap between the seen and unseen. In that regard, the prison population is an unseen and forgotten community that is full of individuals who need healing just like we all do. Currently, there are approximately 2,010 women incarcerated in Rockville and Indiana Women's Prison together. Our journal program in these two prisons allows us access to bridge the gap by providing a woman with a journal every sale we get on a journal. Our program helps these women who are either incarcerated with their children or in disciplinary units reflect on their past and redefine their futures. Our products are for the unseen woman, for the woman who can do for herself but doesn't take time for herself. The woman who is looking for a place to start. Too many times we don't take the space to heal, we don't have the support systems to allow us to be vulnerable, A Pocket of Sunshine is here for you.
My name is Precious, I am a native San Franciscan. I am a mother and I am also a domestic violence survivor which landed me in incarceration. While I was incarcerated I found myself speaking to a lot of different women and realizing how much trauma I've been through and how hard of a time it really was to do time in prison with those traumas already. There was a mental toll incarceration took a lot of people and there is no outlet. I found myself sending letters of encouragement shaped like pockets to random women or ones I knew that needed it. Unbeknownst to me, that would become A Pocket of Sunshine. After returning home I found myself in desperate need of healing from a domestic violence relationship and family. So I started group chats with my friends that eventually expanded to my co-workers as well. I sent out journal prompts every morning and that is where our 90-day journals started. I wanted to put all the tools I was using and all of the journals I had together to help the people that I talked to that wanted to know where to start. A Pocket of Sunshine has become more than just a step in the journey but a lifestyle.
Although I use terms like wellness and life coach, my ultimate title is Community Builder because everything I do is centered around community. I love speaking to people and not only talking to them but curating thoughtful conversations. Whether it is facilitating wellness workshops, speaking in schools or conferences, building community through thoughtful healing conversation is the goal. Healing is the legacy of A Pocket of Sunshine.
